Before the coming of the Scourge, Dathen Matthews lived in Aldshire, a small human village near Dalaran. Being blind from birth, he learned how to search for useful herbs using his other senses and was apprenticed to a local alchemist. When the Scourge marched on Dalaran, Aldshire was destroyed; Dathen was among those slain who were raised as minions of the Lich King.
Dathen awoke as one of the Forsaken after the alliance with the Horde was well-established. After the Blood Elves joined the Horde, he joined the Forsaken reinforcements to Tranquilien; by this time he had grown adept in stealth and the use of senses other than sight for searching, and became a scout in the darkened Ghostlands. Over the course of the years, Dathen began to run scouting missions with the Horde army's excursions into Outland.
Unlike many Forsaken, Dathen's memory of both his life and his slavery to the Lich King remained intact. Because of this, he was never able to fully leave behind the memories of his old life; when Meletius Shale founded the Brill Apothecary Society, he was quick to join. Dathen's knowledge of herbs and enthusiasm for the order's cause soon earned him the position of Head Field Researcher.
Dathen was a thin, lanky boy in life, and undeath has brought little change. Leather armor that has been patched and repaired countless times forms his clothing, and his short, messy black hair is often covered by a hood. Since he was blind already, Dathen's eyes were gouged out by the Scourge upon his death and covered by a pair of iron bands that are bolted in an "x" across his face.
